2008 Eerie Horror Film Festival Game Competition 

Objective:

The Eerie Horror Film Festival Video Game Competition was established in order to encourage the development and growth of horror, science fiction and mystery themes within the gaming industry as well as to recognize the immense talent, hard work and ingenuity that goes into creating these games. As the gap between the film and gaming world narrows, the Eerie Horror Film Festival is proud to be one of the first events of its kind to offer a video game category along side of their annual film and screenplay competition.

Eligibility:

  • Competition is open to all game designers, developers, programmers and/or conceptual artists.
  • NO game developing skills are needed to enter the Concept, Character or Environment Design categories of this competition.
  • Entries MUST be of a horror, science fiction or suspense/mystery nature.
  • Competition open to entrants 10 years of age or older. (Entrants under 18 years of age MUST have a parent or legal guardian complete and sign all required forms.)
  • Competition is open to an international audience.
  • Content is NOT an issue.

Rules:

  • Entrants must download, complete and mail in an entry form (along with their submission fee) for each category to which they are submitting. (Entrants under 18 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian prepare and sign all entry forms).
  • All submission fees MUST be in U.S. Dollars. Do NOT send cash! Make checks, money orders or cashier’s checks payable to: The Eerie Horror Film Festival.
  • All material, including completed games or those in development must be submitted on CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R or made available on-line for review. Physical entries should be clearly marked with your name and contact information. (See individual category descriptions for guidelines).
  • All entries must be accompanied by documentation, including directions for installation, complete rules, game objectives, keyboard or joystick instructions and a list of credits.
  • Completed game entries must include an automated installation and un-installation routine.
  • Completed games and those under development MUST be formatted to run in a Windows environment.
  • If submitting a completed game, please send us two (2) installable copies of the game, in playable form. Entrant is responsible for providing any and all extra special equipment or hardware (ie: 3-D glasses, headgear, etc) that may be needed to play or view their game.
  • Neither The Eerie Horror Film Festival, nor any other party associated with this competition, is responsible for lost, damaged or misdirected game entries. Submitted games will not be returned.

Procedures:

  • All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges. Finalists and winners will be chosen from all entries received and will be judged on originality, concept, storyline, character and/or environment development, game play (actual or described), entertainment value and overall appearance/description.
  • Please enclose a stamp-addressed postcard if you wish us to notify you that we’ve received your submission. Finalists and winners will be notified by mail on or around September 5, 2008.

2008 Game Categories:

  • (1) Game Concept: Have a great idea for a game? Tell us about it! Send a brief synopsis of the storyline with detailed descriptions of game play, environments, characters and keyboard/joystick movements. NO game development skills are needed for this category!  Feel free to describe weapons, magic spells, bonus levels, etc., as well. The more detail the better. Submit your ideas to us on one CD-R, DVD-R or DVD+R.

  • (2) Character Development : Show us a character (or characters) you’ve created, either on paper, a fully developed 3-D model or anything in between! Artwork, paintings, drawings, sketches, computer generated images, animation, modeling, etc., are all acceptable formats for this category.  NO game development skills are needed!  Tell us about your characters and the clothing, armor, weapons, tools, etc., they may use. Inform us of any names your characters may have and describe the world in which they exist. Submit your character(s) to us on one CD-R, DVD-R or DVD+R.

  • (3) Environment Design: Created a creepy castle? A haunted graveyard? A desolate battlefield? Show us your designs! Artwork, paintings, drawings, sketches, computer generated images, animation, modeling, etc,. are all acceptable formats for this category. NO game development skills are needed!  As with character development, please describe the location and the environment that you have created. Submit your character(s) to us on one CD-R, DVD-R or DVD+R.

  • (4) Game in Development: Developed a killer segment of game play involving characters and environments but are nowhere near completion of an actual game? Submit what you have with documentation of the project you are working on and where the segment fits in relation with the rest of the game. Let us know what your plans are in terms of finishing the game or if this submission was just a demo, experiment, etc. (Plans to complete the project or not will in no way affect the judging process). Submit your game in progress to us on one CD-R, DVD-R or DVD+R. Be sure to format your files so they will run in a Windows environment and remember to provide any installers that may be necessary to play your game on PC.

  • (5) Completed Game: So you have a whole game waiting to be played, eh? Awesome! We can’t wait to give it a try! Submit to this category only if you have developed a full game that is complete from beginning to end. Include any and all documentation on game play, storylines, etc. Submit your completed game to us on one CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R or provide us with a URL address where the game can be found (and played) on line. Be sure to format your files so they will run in a Windows environment and remember to provide any installers that may be necessary to play your game on PC.  

Prizes:

  • Best Game Concept -Award, recognition on all websites with bio of winner, etc., two runners up.
  • Best Game Character Development -Award, recognition on all websites with bio of winner, etc., two runners up.
  • Best Game Environment - Award, recognition on all websites with bio of winner, etc., two runners up.
  • Best Game in Development - Award, recognition on all websites with bio of winner, etc., two runners up.
  • Best Video Game - Award, recognition on all websites with bio of winner, etc., two runners up.

Students MUST have a parent or legal guardian fill out & sign the required paperwork.

Video Game Competition winners will be announced on or around September 5, 2008.

All decisions of judges final. Entry fees are non-refundable.
